Like others said, if the container is large enough, you can probably grow most varieties. Make sure the containers have good drainage.

It takes a very large barrel to grow an indeterminate tomato, if that's what you are looking for. 15-20 gallons. Determinate varieties can grow OK in 5 gallons.
Either way the biggest hassle of container gardening is watering. You have to water by hand a lot, or implement some sort of drip irrigation.
