I noticed this thread was started back in 2008 but there seems to be some recent interest. I found one perennial that has done extremely well in my whisky barrel planter. It's "Jacobs ladder". I did it just as an experiment as I have so many of them and they seem to multiply faster than I can give them away. This way I have at least one plant already established in my barrel when I go out to get some annuals to join it. For those not familiar with this plant it is dark green with leaves that kind of look like a ladder and in spring has lovely little lavender flowers. I recommend it for pots or as a border in your in-ground garden.

I have had very good luck growing shrub roses in planters. I have one on either side of my garage in full sun. Roses are winter hardy, but not out of the ground, so I drag them into the garage after the first frost, and do not touch them again until spring. In spring I trim them and fertilize and water them and they're off and running again

I've done guavas and several citrus trees, and they made it through last winter indoors quite well. With citrus, grafted trees have a dwarfish growth habit, so that may be the way to go - I know of a few very good nurseries that sell them at reasonable prices.
