Just planted some marigolds, impatient and other plants (mothers day gift from my children) yesterday in our backyard. Came home this evening to find that squirrel has eaten off the flowers. How do we keep them away?

I had the same problem, so I decided to take all the bread leftovers. When they hardened, I put them through the blender, then I mix in some bird seeds, and put them away from the garden. Guess what......I have beautiful birds side by side with the squirrels, and my flowers are okay.

Try it. I feed them every 2, 3 days, and even placed a water fountain. Now, I sit and watch their antics, and how well they interact with one another.

A lesson for all us humans............

I have the same problem. I am trying "hot pepper" sprinkled over the flowers. So far it seems to be working. I'm hoping that over time, they'll learn not to go there and I won't have to keep sprinkling the flowers.

Please know if you are using Cayenne or any "hot" powder, the squirrels have been known to get it in their eyes and scratch and claw their eyes out. Its very cruel. Please rethink this. I love Rubies answer but doesnt a spray like "DEER OFF" work with squirrels? its a repellent that they just avoid.

Unless it's 24/7 and closer than I stand (from my porch), they laugh it off; I have lost three bell peppers this weekend.

Squirrels are brave little SOBs, aren't they? They just stare at me when I try to chase them away from the garden. "Oh, yeah, lady? Chase me away, and I'll chew your wiring!!"

I take the fur out of my cats' brush and work it around the base of each plant, like you would a side dressing, but not as deep. It sorta works, sorta doesn't. *sigh*

All animals supposedly hate the smell and texture of human hair...

But then YOU are looking at, working in old human hair so... UGH!

I have plenty of squirrels and have yet to find anything that keeps 'em out.
