I had one latch on my finger as a kid, and it scarred the heck out of me. Now the more in the yard the better. We also have a bat again, I was worried because of their fungus disease.
Oh here is the pic of the cocoon which did not attach earlier.
Wow! I saw wings in the pics. Has anyone seen one actually fly?
Yes - this summer...I'd also never seen one with wings before...or never noticed. Had one land right next to me last week while I was digging up the yard.
We also have a tree, as in one of the many, that is LOADED with Walking Sticks. Some trees have one or two, but just that one tree literally has them all over. It is the Walking Stick tree.
i have a field on my property which i like to allow to grow fairly wild (ok, im lazy), but there are a huge amount of mantises in there at the moment...all seem to be fairly large characters...heres one i snapped while he was doing a little antenna maintenance...
Here is one I snapped one day that was on one of my Longleaf pine trees... it thought it was blending in well. This was July 2008. I guess this little guy is dead now.
When I was a kid in the sixties my Mom wanted to maintain a "natural" chemical free city garden. After years of battling insect pests she bought one of those preying mantis egg kits. Had to keep it in the 'frige with all kinds of warnings to family members not to mistake it for some food leftovers. When the big day came, we placed it on the fence beside the garden and waited anxiously for about 48 hours. We got to see the miracle of the little ivory colored mantises leave the next on a body chain one by one. And one by one as they dried their wings they all flew away to points unknown.
We had to go back to picking the caterpillars and leafhppers off our crops by hand. Sigh.
