I am researching my Indian ancestry. I have Cherokee, and Blackfoot ancestors. Having difficulty finding info I need to trace the Blackfoot Tribe connection. Anyone know of what sites would be helpful in this area?

How do you know you have Cherokee and Blackfoot ancestors and what type of information do you have on those individuals you can start with? It's usually best to begin with known ancestors and work your way out from there.

If it's the Eastern Band of Cherokee, you would contact the Tribal Council on the Reservation in North Carolina, which the Western Band is in Oklahoma. And I'm sorry, I do not know the exact address. For Blackfoot, the Res is partly in Montana and partly just over the line in Canada, so similarly I believe you would contact the Tribe's Government there. Keep in mind there are Blackfeet Indians, Blackfoot, and Confederate Blackfoot (which means they work together), and if I'm not mistaken, they are all on the same Reservation. Now, the Cherokee have a roll of members, which you have to be at least 1/64th (I think, but could be a larger percentage) blood Cherokee to have your name or family's name on there. It's possible through the rolls you can find your original Native American family name and so forth. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs may be another possible source for research. But I'd try writing to the Tribal Governments and see if there is a historian, perhaps, who could help you, since I imagine they get these ancestral info requests with some frequency. Also, of course, just do a general search online from your home page for all the various websites set up by Native Americans and also historians and encylopedias who mention them in detail and provide various links. I hope this very little bit I know might help you move forward on your geneaolgy research.

I'mk speaking for Oklahoma. For Cherokee, you can check the Dawes Roll of the Five Civilized Tribes. They are online. You have to be able to trace your lineage to a member of the Dawes Roll. Talequah, OK is the capitol of the Cherokee Nation. There are only 3 federally recognized Cherokee tribes, 2 in Oklahoma and one in North Carolina.
www.cherokee.org will give you lots of info.
