I am looking for comments on either Uhaul or Budget truck rental trucks.
From other posts I am aware the Penske is the preferrred company but they don't go where I need to go.
Thanks,
Don
Stay away from U-Haul if you can. They have the worst maintained fleet overall. Any tow truck driver can tell you that they get more calls for U-Haul trucks than all other rental trucks combined.
The ones I see broken down on the side of the road are most often a U-Haul truck. Seems they still haven't cleaned up their act after the expose's on TV several years ago.
I've rented Ryder trucks on several occasions and had no problems with them.
I do not have any involvement with any of these firms in any way.
My husband worked for the U-Haul corporate office for 8 years, and when it came time for our state to state move he refused to use a U-Haul truck. (too many horror stories, and felt the company just doesn't care about the customers)
Old post, I know - and I like Pennske, Ryder and even Budget ... but I have used U-Haul many times over the years and I've never broken down - although naturally, I was nervous about it the whole trip. The one thing they have going for them is plenty of locations so that, in case you do break down there's more-likely-than-not a dealer near while none of the competitors can really make that claim.
I've rented a truck probably about ten times in my life. I think they were all U-Hauls. Anyway, I never got stranded on the side of the road except once during the gas crisis of 1979 when the truck ran dry about 5 miles from my destination. Just my experience...
My experience is that U Haul rents junk trucks & trailers but has GREAT breakdown assistence service... A minor point: the Ryder International 4300 26' truck we rented from Penske had cruise control but a comparable U Haul we looked at didn't Something to consider on a long trip.
(And if you don't mind; a personal observation: The two scariest drivers on the highway, IMHO, are rental truck drivers and the people in a vehicle FOLLOWING the rental truck because the ONLY thing they can see is the back door of the truck they are following. Like you'd get easily seperated from a slower orange or yellow truck.... Just an observation.)

To bad you can’t get a Penske truck. I just drove a 22’ truck pulling a car from CA to NC. The truck had only 2500 miles, pulled like a mule. Set the cruise at 70 and steered.
I wouldn’t consider a U-Haul, besides they were $1000.00 more than Penske.

What was your MPG for the trip?
