Help! I just got a re-quote from Mayflower movers and the price went up to $xxxx. We don't have THAT much stuff.. Dining room table, 6 chairs, love seat, two club chairs, some tables, about 50 boxes, 10 wardrobes, some tools and work bench stuff. We even removed stuff from our first quote (BBQ Grill, patio furniture, sectional couch) and the price went up $200. Plus, they want to charge us a "shuttle" fee because the truck can't make it up the driveway. (it's on an large incline).

Need to find someone in Somerset county for an out of state move. Looking for reputable companies, not these fly by night ones!

Thanks!

North Jersey is infamous for the number of unscrupulous movers that operate in the shadow of NYC.

The tariffs used by most REPUTABLE interstate household goods carriers are formatted in such a way that as a customer's estimated weight increases, their linehaul transportation rate decreases.

Most REPUTABLE interstate movers also have impractical operation (or shuttle) provisions in their tariff which allow them to legally apply additional equipment and/or manpower charges to their bill if a van operator is prevented from providing loading and/or unloading service because:
  • the size of his normal, over-the-road equipment makes it impractical or illegal to operate on a highway, road, street, driveway, alley, or approach to a customer’s home, or;
  • there are inadequate or unsafe loading or unloading facilities; or,
  • providing the service using normal access and egress routes would endanger life or place personal property in jeopardy; or,
  • riots, Acts of God, the public enemy, the authority of law, the existence of violence, or such possible disturbances as tend to create reasonable apprehension of danger to persons or property
According to the New Jersey Warehouseman's and Movers Association, there are over a dozen very REPUTABLE (and probably equally expensive) movers within a dozen miles of Somerset.

You're planning your relocation during the busiest weeks in the moving industry all year.

Moving is expensive normally but even more so during the peak period when every one else is competing for the same capacity.

A mobile/portable container probably not a practical alternative "because the truck can't make it up the driveway. (it's on an large incline).

Unless, of course, the "stuff" can be loaded into a smaller 'shuttle' truck and transported to the POD location.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones... right?
People who live at the top of inclines should expect extra bother (& expense) getting things up and down.

c'est la vie
