Don't even get me started on the media's portrayal of accents--they're almost never accurate.
Nothing I hate worse than a fake Southern accent. I love the movie 'Steel Magnolias', but I have to laugh when I hear Julia Roberts say "Mamaaaah, they put rubahs on my car", LOL.
The only one that even sound remotely Southern in that movie is Dolly Parton, and that's because she was the only Southerner in it.
There are slight southern accents in the very rural areas of NY's Catskill and Taconic Mountains. Some of the locals make west virginia hillbillies look sophisticated.
At one time there was a rather large community of people in rural Washington State from North Carolina. When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s it was not uncommon to still hear people with a Southern accent in an area northeast of Seattle.
Today most of that generation is gone...however there is still a strong connection between the area and North Carolina.

I've got a hunch that Edward R. Murrow of CBS fame was part of this migration...

Yep.
The Gone With The Wind hyperbole gets really old. Oh Hollywood....how you miss the mark so often.
Southern accents aren't commonly heard around here, but when you get into New Mexico you start hearing more thicker Texan-ish accents when you get to places like Las Cruces, Ruidoso, Roswell, Hobbs, etc.
You can even find some southern-ish accents here in inland CA that aren't transplants.
