Hmmm, since this is just USA/Canada:

-Los Angeles (everything. I didn't have a car for the first 16 years of my life, and only sporadically had one from 16-18. A 'long trip' was from here to Long Beach)
-Phoenix (Bus)
-New York City (Bus, SI Ferry, Subway [first three made my morning commute from SI to Brooklyn], LIRR. No chance for Metro North)
-New Jersey (New Jersey Transit trains, Light Rail to Bayonne to walk across Bayonne Bridge, River Line from Trenton to Camden)
-DC (DC Metro from Silver Spring)
-Boston (MBTA Commuter rail from Providence, local train lines in the city)
-Bay Area (Everything. No car first year at Berkeley. Made too many frequent trips to Fremont on BART, and commuted to SF when I was working there)
-Seattle (rode the new light rail line this past summer!)
-Portland (light rail)
-Vancouver (sky train)

Need to get out more

NO NO NO. The OP specifically said not to include taxi! Even places as small as Brunswick, GA are showing up on this thread because people are including "taxi" as public transportation.

"Public transport (also public transportation, public transit, or mass transit) is a shared passenger transportation service which is available for use by the general public, as distinct from modes such as Taxicab and car pooling which are not shared by strangers without private arrangement."
