My friend from New Jersey said that rednecks up north are just called white trash. It's just the "potayto vs potawto" argument(phonetically spelled obviously). Essentially, white trash/rednecks inhabit every corner of the good ole US of A.
And yes, there is not much of a difference up and down the east coast as some would have you believe. It's more of a urban vs rural mentality, which again, happens in all areas of the country.

To be honest my brother flies a confederate flag. He's a born and bred Appalachian New Yorker.
And I find myself agreeing with a lot about the southern ideals. Though, not slavery. But many northern ideals seemed to close to authoritarian for me. I am a libertarian.

AMEN! As a very rural personality myself, being from the north has me constantly having to prove it. Which gets old fast.
I'm an Allegheny mountain man and proud of it. From the northeast or not I am a country boy all the way!

I'm a born and bred Southerner, and I don't fly the Confederate flag. I don't really have a problem with those who do...I just don't identify with the reason. When I want to show my Southern pride, I fly the Tennessee flag.
I don't think the South was really libertarian. I associate libertarianism more with the American West. Also several areas of Appalachia disliked the Confederacy as much, or more, than the Union. East Tennessee I think also considered seceding so it could join the Union. Some Appalachians were fine with slavery, but disliked the coastal planters or thought secession wasn't feasible. A noticeable minority of Appalachians disliked slavery, particularly German Appalachians as I recall.

That is true. I just meant that a lot of northern ideals have evolved into "you can't do that, you can't do this, gun control gun control gun control" etc.
Don't get me wrong though, there are things on both sides that I agreed with and disagreed with. I just take no offense at the confederate flag at all.
