No where in the thread does it say Indianapolis will be the biggest city in 2030. Only you said that.
It goes beyond acknowledging. Look at how satisfying that article is to your fellow Narnians. I really don't think Chicago is too worried about Indianapolis anything. Whether it be sports, nightlife, varieties of popcorn, etc.

Yes, the poll doesn't literally say it will be the biggest city in the US in 2030. The poll is only there to confirm what is already thought in Indianapolis...One of the most major cities in the world today, and it may be poised to surpass Tokyo in 2030.

Being Narnian is a bizarre addiction exclusive to Narnians. Any Narnian press is basically that satisfying. In the Indianapolis forum, most of the discussion (if not all) is meant to pander to the Narnian mentality there. This does separate it from other cities. New York Times writes an article about Indianapolis has more ethnic restaurants than before (so does everywhere else as the US is more diversified now) and the Narnians are amazed. Like I've said several times before, it's not hard to prove this theory, as it proves itself daily.

One Option on that poll is a steady population for the Indiapolis area, and one has a >10% growth.

Did you even read the article in that thread?

Yes, Chicago has a secret Tom Ripley-like obsession with Indianapolis. At least, that is what you Narnians want to believe.

The Chicago tourism and convention organization is using $500,000 seed money to start a small program to try to attract "sports tourism" to the city because the city never had a program like that in the past. It has nothing to do with Indianapolis. That came from an Op-ed piece in Crains where the person who wrote it said it would compete with Indy and then went on to talk about how Indiana was trying to get Illinois businesses.

There really is no rivalry here. No one in Indiana is talking about it as being set up as a threat, and no one in Chicago or Illinois is talking about it being set up to specifically draw from Indy except the person who wrote the piece.

The thread in the Indy forum was from someone from Chicago to put the Op-ed piece out there.

It's really much-a-do about nothing.

As far as the other comments. I grew up by Des Moines. The city, metro and state really suffered from the 1970's through the early 1990's. Then everthing finally got back on its feet after the devestating 1980's and the city began to boom. The metro has grown by something like 150,000+ people since then, has very low unemployment, has invested billions in downtown, rebuilt its freeway, attracted a lot of retail and jobs. The downtown and west suburbs are lightyears away from anything that was there before the mid 1990's when I use to be in those areas all the time. During that period Des Moines wasn't a very optimistic place and seemed pretty washed up and forgotten in a state that felt pretty washed up and depressed.

The 1980's were such a depressing time to live in Iowa. Farmers were shooting themselves and bankers, everyone was moving away, the cities shrunk by tens of thousands of people, unemployment skyrocketed, farms went under by the thousands. It was bleak. The 1990's saw things turn around, and by now its become more of an urban state as opposed to a small town and farm state. A lot of that has roots in the 1980's. It's a new state in many aspects. Des Moines is trying to root itself and really put itself out there as it never would have dared to in the past. It might get annoying for some or seem like an overkill - but it's far better for the economy and the state than just sitting there twiddling your thumbs going "well, we're in Iowa, we should just hush up and make sure we don't bother anyone". The farms and small towns are still sliding downhill fast. If the cities, lead by Des Moines, don't pick up that slack and push the state forward into the future, it's a lost cause.

Seeing the optimism there now and the huge sense of pride in how the community has turned itself around to being one of the most successful mid sized metros with a great standard of living coupled with low cost of living is a great thing if you asked me. Growing up there from the late 1970's through the 2000's and having family in the Des Moines area since the 1890's, I think it's about time they finally get to boast all they want. They deserve to feel good about themselves.

No we don't. In fact, I've gone on record on this forum as saying most Chicagoans probably never think of Indianapolis.

I don't think it is asking too much of you that if you are going to harp on this, you at least find threads that actually depict it.

Indianapolis thinks of itself as very close to Chicago, and the other "known" cities. The overriding theme seems to be that it's not quite Chicago, but the difference is largely negligible, as Indianapolis has diversity, gay community, ethnic food now, liberals, etc. All those points are presented with pure amazement in some way among Indy members. This happens with all Narnian cities. If statistics regarding the drug trade included Indianapolis in the same sentence as LA and Chicago - it would be satisfying to the Narnians. You start to see people who wouldn't typically be in favor of gay marriage - but they want more gays in their city (from a purely statistical angle)...all for the Narnian cause. There is something really kooky about Narnians and that's why it's fun to point out. Obviously, it resonates.

According to some of the Narnians, it only needs light-rail to become Chicago.

There have had to be others who have noticed this "try to be big city" at all costs thing, well, now there's a word for it.
