They are 5 miles apart across the Straits of Mackinaw, but if the ferry service was down it was a 870 mile drive from one to the other before the bridge was built if you took the short way around Lake Michigan. If you went around Lake Huron it was close to 950 miles.

You could also drive to Muskegon and take the ferry to Wisconsin. There also used to be a ferry out of Frankfort, Mi.

Wisconsin is the northernmost state that doesn't touch Canada(Michigan touches Canada near Detroit, Minnesota borders Canada, so does New York).

Seattle,WA is closer to a two Canadian metropolitan areas than it is to any major American metropolitan.

From Seattle,USA to Victoria,Canada(136 miles, including the ferry)
Seattle to Vancouver,Canada(141-159 miles depending on which route is taken)

Now for American major metros:
Seattle to Portland(174-198 miles, depending on which route you take)
Seattle to Spokane(280-360 miles, depending on the route)
Seattle to Boise(504 miles)
Seattle to San Francisco(808-850 miles depending on route)
Seattle to Los Angeles(1,135-1219 miles depending on route)
Seattle to San Diego(1,255 miles)
Seattle to Minneapolis(1,656 miles)

In addition to my last post, the distance from Vancouver,Canada to Ensenada,Mexico is shorter than the distance from Seattle,WA to Minneapolis,MN.

Vancouver to Ensenada(1,482-1,599 miles)
Seattle to Minneapolis(1,656 miles)

You have to traverse three nations and still have a shorter distance(at its longest) to traveling between Seattle and Mpls, which are in the same nation, and Mpls is about 3 degrees south of Seattle.

The southernmost point in Alaska, at 54° 45', is further north than Canada's northernmost major metropolitan area, Edmonton, which is at 53°34′N, and the northernmost city in North America with 500,000 or more residents.
