The Nunavut territory of northern Canada covers a vast land area of 725,018 square miles (larger than Alaska), but contains a total population of just 31,906 (less than the city of Dover, Delaware.) This means there are approximately 22.72 square miles of land for each Nunavut resident.
If the United States had the same population density as Nunavut, it would contain a total of about 167,000 persons.

It's possible to visit Nunavut on a comfortable car trip. The road is paved all the way from Montreal to Wemindj, Quebec, about 1,400 km, on the shores of James Bay. All islands in James Bay are within the jurisdiction of Nunavut Territory, and in Wemindji, you can arrange an outfitter to take you about 3 miles out in an outboard, to one of their fishing camps on a Nunavut island.

Similarly, one can drive to the eastern coast of Canada, board a ferry, and land in French territory. The islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon are inhabited by speakers of Parisian French who use Euros in everyday commerce. You can even buy French-made cars there.

In Washington State, Vashon and Maury Islands were once two separate islands, but that changed when a small mad made isthmus connecting the two was made. That tiny isthmus is home to tiny, unincorporated Portage, Washington. Although now technically a single island (sometimes referred to as Vashon-Maury Island), the two are still considered to be separate by many.

The general practice of geographers is to consider only "natural" islands to be islands.

Most of Lansing, Michigan, is located in Ingram County, with a small portion extending into Eaton County. Lansing is the only U.S. state capital (among the 47 located in counties) that is not also a county seat. The county seat of Ingham County is Mason, and the county seat of Eaton County is Charlotte.

I am wondering what the largest city in the US is that is the largest in its county but not the county seat. As far as largest cities that aren't county seats, you would have Long Beach (probably the largest), followed by Mesa, AZ and Arlington, TX, but they are not the largest cities in their counties (superseded by Los Angels, Phoenix and Fort Worth respectively).

I am thinking Plano, TX would be the largest city in the country that is the largest in its county but not the county seat (my current city of McKinney is the seat). Can anyone think of one larger?

Anaheim (336,000) is slightly larger than Santa Ana (324,000), which is the county seat of Orange County, California.

St. Petersburg, Florida, has 244,000, but Clearwater is the county seat of Pinellas County.

Bay Minette, AL is the county seat of Baldwin County, but only its fourth largest city.

There is at least one case in which a county and its largest city have the same name, but that city is not the county seat. Sycamore, not DeKalb, is the county seat of DeKalb County, Illinois.
