There are a lotta places which are beautiful/fun to visit but living a life could be totally another story...

Any experiences to share?

I'd probably say NYC, Chicago, and LA. Of course a lot of this is just personal preference but while I love all three cities, I don't think I would care for living in a such a huge global city.

I've visited a lot of wonderful places in the summer, that I would not want to live in the winter.

I visited friends of relatives who lived in rural Georgia just outside Atlanta as well as Tuscaloosa and Jackson. Pretty nice weather (though it was cooler than normal and not at all humid when I was there), lots of nice homes, and I liked the landscape and change of scenery. There's a lot of things I liked.

There's also a lot of reasons why I wouldn't want to live there...for the most part, I just don't find the South all that appealing with the exception of southern Florida. Maybe that's a typical northerner bias I have but yea, I like visiting the South, but I don't think I could live there for multiple years.

I'm a country boy. There are a few cities on my visit list but I wouldn't want to live in any city. Nothing against city life it just isn't for me.

Las Vegas.

Fun place, great eats. Beautiful scenery, I love the desert vistas and just driving out. And the sunsets are just majestic.

Except now I'm older... with a young child and another on the way. It forces me to look at the overall quality of life issues. And these are the main problems I have:

Clark County School District is among one of the biggest districts in US and its overall baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. Sure, there are some good schools within the district... but the prevailing culture in LV doesn't make it any better. Its hard to make a point to the kids the importance of education when there's "always a job" in the casino business... like a 75K a year valet job (who would want to turn that down?). There is no sense of a community where parents pushes the kids to do well (except @ those selected few good areas)-- the school district is *huge* and its hard to make a change. Plus I grew up in Seattle where there's so many educational and recreational opportunities for kids-- LV doesn't offer as much (though it is growing every year, I'll give them that). I wouldn't mind private schools-- but I don't like it when there's a such small student population.

I don't like that the Casinos are the big game in town. In comparison to Seattle (List of companies based in Seattle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), it... really has no other businesses that could help keep the city afloat if there's a downturn. I know LV does push for some business variety, but it's not really healthy for a town to be so dependent on one aspect of business. Obviously they're having to learn this the last 5-6 years.

I also don't like the continuous building bland sprawl... I do think they should put a limit on how many houses are built each year and encourage a real town center type of environs for each areas.

One more issue I have with LV is the water quality. Its hard water. Yuck!

NYC, Atlanta and LA I'll agree with.

The others on your list... no.

In fact, I'll say that the Carolinas are the opposite - good places to live, terrible to visit.

I would agree with the Las Vegas suggestion. Nice to visit for 3-5 days, but I would never want to live there.

I've enjoyed visiting DC, but people I know who lived there didn't precisely like it.

I've known people who liked visiting Memphis, Tennessee (music, architecture, etc) but it's said to be a fairly poor place to live. Maybe New Orleans would be even more that way. Part of this is I can't stand heat, I know most people are more anti-cold.

See you Saturday!
