No, its not my definition. I do agree with you that most Angelenos think it that way, but the US Census Bureau does not consider Riverside-Bernardino-Ventura as part of the LA metro (MSA).

The U.S Census is not all accurate from what i've seen...Trust the Stats of those that live in CA,not the one's who are 3,000 miles away

Default Dont realy take that chart to serious!

Sorry to tell you, but Aurora Colorado housing market (sucks) has been flat as a pancake!! and a lot of foreclosures, making it one of the cheapest places to buy a property in Denver.
Trust me I own 2 residential properties in Aurora.
Some times when we look at statistical facts even if they come from good sources don't necessarily take them as a real fact!

From my perspective it seems like people who create those Bogus Lists are L.A Bashers and will do what they can to drop L.A's Rankings when it's something Positive, but would include the entire 5 County Metro Region of L.A-San Bernardino-Riverside-Orange-Ventura when it's something Negative.
Again, city and state boundaries are totally irrelevant when dealing with metro areas. The 5 county region you keep speaking of is the 'Combined Statistical Metro Area' (CMSA) or The Greater LA area.

-LA's metro area does not get 'cut in half', it's Primary Statistical Metro Area (PMSA) simply does not include the San-Bernardino-Riverside-Orange-
Ventura area. The same way NYC's PMSA does not include Connecticut.

HOWEVER, the CMSA of LA does include the San-Bernardino.-....-Ventura areas. The PMSA of NYC is approx. 18 million, while the CMSA is closer to 21 million. NYC's CMSA does include Connecticut

Definitions/classifications of metros as provided by the US Census:

When NOT talking about the PMSA of NYC then yes, CT does in fact get included. The same way that San Bernardino-----Ventura area gets included in LA's metro area.

The US Census is not controlled by the city of New York. Although the numbers provided are not to be taken as exacts, they are the primary means of US population measurement

Its not that sinister,
The Office of Management & Budget(OMB) is part of the exective branch of the federal government and is in charge, among other things, with determining the boundaries of all metropolitan areas. Since the office is under the executive branch, its director is appointed by the president.

In 2001,
The terminology was changed
1. PMSA(Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area) became MSA(Metropolitan Statistical Area)
2. CMSA(Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area) became CSA(Combined Statistical Area)

In the case of Los Angeles and The Inland Empire, in order for any 2(or more) counties to combine and become a single MSA, they would have to meet at least one or a combination of or all of the following criteria:

1. 25% of all workers in LA-Orange Counties must work in Riverside-San Bernardino Counties-OR 25% of all workers in Riverside-San Bernardino Counties must work in LA-Orange Counties. This is how all those NY Metro Counties are included with the City because everyone back there works in Manhattan or in one of the outer boroughs.

2. A uninterrupted overlap of development must exist for the length of at least 3 continuous miles between the two regions. San Francisco-Oakland and San Jose, despite uninterrupted housing development between them and having constant density, fall short because at the San Mateo and Santa Clara county lines, there’s an office park part of Stanford(on the SF side mind you, while Stanford itself is across the street in San Jose for heavenssake) that takes up about .3 miles and so doesn’t count. That’s ridiculous.

3. There has to be overwhelming consensus between the leadership and people in both regions that they are more accurately identified as one region. Im not sure if people in the Inland Empire align themselves with Los Angeles the way Angelenos think they are.

LA-OC & The Inland Empire, however meet the criteria, along with Oxnard-Ventura, to be consolidated into a Combined Statistical Area(CSA), formerly known as the Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area(CMSA), which is basically requires the same as the above, except
1. Instead of a 25% threshold for commuting, its lowered to 15%. And that qualifies LA to be combined with the IE and Oxnard-Ventura.

There are many interesting emerging trends in California 2 principal metro areas as far as possible Metropolitan Area combinations:

1. Los Angeles-I think the foreseeable future points to Kern County and Santa Barbara County as the 2 counties most likely to eventually become part of the Los Angeles CSA. San Diego is of interest as well as many people from Riverside County now work in San Diego and many people from Northern San Diego County now work in Orange County. At this point, I don’t see 15% of San Diego working up in the LA CSA anytime soon, not in the next 30 years at least, but who knows. I do believe that the LA CSA will surpass the New York CSA in population in the next 2 decades. Its seems only natural considering the times and how much Southern California is growing.

2. San Francisco-What’s happening in Northern California is going to surprise a lot of people once the dust settles. While SoCal has(rightfully) gotten all the attention for its booming mega-population-The 100-mile radius around San Francisco has quietly surpassed the 10 million mark in population with a Gross Product of $550 Billion, and the State of California estimtes that the population by 8 million by 2050. 18 Million people in a hundred mile radius is a lot. Especially considering that once you leave that radius, there’s no other significant population for about 300 miles. This relative isolation creates a very distinct interdependence that means the bay area provides high paying jobs and the valley will provide cheaper homes. What you have now is the US’s 3rd largest metro in the making
