Brown water on an ocean beach. I wouldn't swim in it.

The water may be clean, but still looks disgusting for swimming in.

It's honestly not that bad. Having a beach is better than not having one at all, or having one with frigid waters.

Very nice water and sand, but darn that beach is so narrow. Must get very crowded, or overwashed with high tides or wind.

You're right if you mean for lying on sand. I'd disagree about swimming though.

I did see people swimming in the water when I was there. I have a feeling though they are all from around there and are just used to it. If you are not used to water like that though it is a big turnoff.

Literally you couldn't see your hand when you put it less than a foot below the surface.

Yes, but I'd wager most people would rather swim in the ocean on a humid 93F day, no matter what the color of the water is, than sit in the sand under the hot Southern sun being eaten alive by no-see'ums. The fact that the water is very clean (pollution-wise) makes it even better.

Tybee seemed so beautiful until this one beach scene towards the end of the movie that I specifically remember. I was not interested in the scenery from then on. Even the other beach scenes showed mediocre beaches. They didn't look very swimmable or even a good place to relax. Perhaps this was a different part of Tybee and not a main strip but not impressive. I had heard so much about Tybee Island but then I saw the movie and it wasn't what people had said about it. Granted, this is all from a movie which is why I said excuse me for referring to it, but still. If a movie didn't show the island's best, what's its best?

I still want to go down to these areas, though, just to see what it's like. How's the water temps?
Tybee Island is definitely not an impressive beach, though I am used to beaches in Florida. What is interesting about Tybee is how far you can go out into the water and still get decent low but fast moving waves. The time I went it was pretty packed at multiple spots, and makes a good day trip from Savannah. Impressive beach though? No.

looks similar to tybee island

I had no issue swimming in it though, but yes...don't really like that style. I went over there for the day when in Savannah. If somebody was in Atlanta, not sure why they would choose these areas for beaches when you have Destin/Pcola/Panama City etc in similar distance. The only reason I could think of is , the hotels are cheaper there... or they are combining it with day trip to Charleston, Savannah...which are definitely more cool than the gulf coast cities in North FL.

Pictures dont lie. You do. Or at least you work on very limited information.
They are for the most part, the stretch of white and clear water goes to from clear around Orange Beach to darker through Gulf Shores into Dauphin Island around Mobile Bay and suck all the way past Louisiana and well into Texas. It's not just half of AL, MS, and LA with darker water and less than stellar beaches, the same thing happens going East in Florida once you approach Apalachicola Bay getting darker and murkier through Carrabelle, Alligator Point, etc. then the beaches more or less suck until you get to the Tampa Area.

I haven't been to GA or SC beaches yet but I have been to Clearwater, Florida on the Gulf and man it was gorgeous there (water almost 90 degrees - amazing!) but about half the time we were there, the water was crystal clear and the other half it was murky and sandier. It was kind of a turn off to be honest. I prefer clearer water, but of course the water anywhere can be a little bad depending on the day. Despite the iffy water on some days, I loved that particular Florida beach! The sand was so white and sand so bright that you couldn't go onto the beach without sunglasses because of the glare. I wasn't used to that either but it was a nice surprise!

And thanks for that awesome pic of Island Beach, one of my NJ favorites!
lol Clearwater looks absolutely nothing like SC/GA... If you think Clearwater was even the least bit "murky" don't go to the beaches in SC/GA..

As for soft powdery sand...the sand around Destin, PC etc is softer than Clearwater.

Kapalua Bay Beach is the best beach in Hawaii. Kaanapali is not.
Kiawah should be high on this list.

Well, I have never been to an ocean beach. Our best lake beach near Oklahoma City is a quick getaway , and a lot more quiet. The sand is nice, and the boats create waves that are fun to float on, but you cant see past your chest.

I have always wanted to visit San Diego, and swim in the pacific. I'm sure the beaches there are pretty nice.
