Most people who want to move to California are thinking more of moving into the coastal cities rather than into the desert. Because of the cold Pacific currents along California's coasts, summers closer to the coast are usually in the 70s and 80s while slightly inward into the valleys and basins sometimes get to the 90s. You need to get far into a few parts of the southern California deserts such as Death Valley where virtually no one lives to get to the 110s with any regularity in the summers.

I can’t physically wear enough clothes to keep me warm in those extreme temperatures. Even if I could manage to find clothing that could keep me warm, I would still have to breathe that freezing air into my lungs, which is painful for me.
Pull a scarf over your mouth and nose. Problem solved, and also keeps half your face warm.

I went on vacation to Hawaii recently. Got off the plane and you are immediately smothered by the humidity. Like being back in Indiana during the summer. We were at the airport waiting for our shuttle and a roach crawled on our luggage. We were driving to our condo and the radio was going on about an outbreak of dengue fever. Walked in our condo and there was a dead roach in the middle of the living room. The tropics can be so charming. Reminded me of when I was a kid living in southern Alabama and why I never want to move south of I-70 and why we generally don't go on tropical vacations.

That said, it was still a really fun trip, I just would never want to live there. I'll take my iceboxes, thanks.

It was -9 when I took these photos in Minneapolis last weekend. You can clearly see people outside, not dying:

That looks sweet. Got to love a population that learns to deal with their cold winters and not shy away from it.

Yeah, if it was that easy. I lived in those climates for over 35 years. You don’t think I tried that?

I live in Erie, PA, winner of the snowiest US city over 100,000 people last year.

So why do I live here? Well, I go to school here, work here, have family here, but overall I feel like the 4 months of winter don't outweigh the beautiful spring, summer and fall we have. Yes, lake effect snow sucks, but after experiencing it for all your life, you get used to it.

I'm a recent college graduate living at home to save money. I highly doubt an employer will ever relocate me in my current industry (marketing and advertising). However, I'm going to law school in the near future, and will use that as an opportunity relocate to a place I'd actually like to live.
