From a non religious or political standpoint Texas to me is cattle, large cities, oil, football being like a religion, the university of Texas Austin, and cowboys. I'm from Wisconsin and have never been to Texas before so I don't know how accurate these are.

From someone who has never been to Texas, these are the first thoughts that come to mind when I think of the state:

Oil
Extreme heat
Extreme conservative politics
Wide-open spaces
Car-oriented cities
Blue bonnets
Hill Country
The Alamo
Cowboys
Southern accents
The Bush family
Border tensions/drug trade
Spanish language
Scrubland
Dirt cheap beach vacations (South Padre Island, Corpus Christi)

I lived there for a while. It was okay in some ways, but not remotely my thing.

Crowded. Cluttered. Constant construction.
Feels like a chaotic place every time I go there.
You're describing NYC, not Texas.

Wide open spaces describes most of Texas.

Not a whole lot of good things unfortunately
On a strange note, Whataburger (Texas' version of In-N-Out) is the only place in Texas where you can legally ride a horse through the drive-thru lane.

You'll see far more Burqa's in the cosmopolitan cites of Houston & Dallas than you will cowboy hats.

Another misconception is that if you say you went to college "in Texas," most people assume University of Texas - Austin. Sometimes they think Texas A&M, but much less so. They seem to be unaware the state has many colleges.
Like Rice University, one of the most prestigious universities in the nation. Its basically an affordable Ivy League level school. Its right up there with Harvard & Yale.

Texas is one of those states with a big personality, so Americans, whether they've been there or not, seem to have an opinion of it.

I lived there for a couple years while in the military (San Antonio) and my perception is that it's big, flat (overall... I've been all over the Hill Country and Big Bend area, so I know it's not all flat!), hot, humid and buggy. Overall, Houston/Dallas/San Antonio are very sprawly, similar in look and feel, and not terribly interesting to me. I found Austin to be the most unique city in geography and feel.

What comes to mind: Barbeque, great Tex-Mex, HEB, Tom Thumb, those handy "turn around" lanes for freeways, and people who are extremely proud of their state.

Conservative politics can be a good thing, but the way Texas does it, its horribly bad.
