The "South" has boomed the last 3 decades, however, surprisingly, there is no area of the south where there are at least 10 million people in a 100 square mile radius. You can get 2 non overlapping such areas on the West Coast, two in the Great Lakes region and 2....maybe 3 in the Northeast. Of course the Northeast is the only region that offers at least one non overlapping 20 million plus area in 100 square miles.
Florida would probably make the list if not for elongated metro areas that hug the coast. Orlando would come the closest in Florida with about 8 million. The south's growth seems concentrated in regional centers and these regional centers are generally miles from other metros of half million or more. Even with the fast growth....it will be more than a decade before any Southern area reaches such a distinction.
Correction:
Centered at Riverside CA ......20 million. So there are two such areas of the country with at least 20 million.

I think the Texas triangle area (Houston/DFW/Austin/SA) is inching rapidly closer to this bench mark.
That triangle would form about a 300 mile radius. I would say that Dallas, in a couple of decades, would have such a region centered around Dallas. Houston has the water that cuts of half the land area.
Chicago's entire CSA is still less than 10 million people, albeit barely, so where is this other area in the Great Lakes that has 10 million people?
Chicago one....Detroit is the other.... Detroit brings in parts of Canada that border it. Detroit, minus Canada, is about 9.2 million.
