Portland currently has 11 murders and 2 homicides ruled to be justified. There may be a 12th murder depending on the status of a shooting victim currently in the hospital. While higher than previous recent years, it's not quite 32.
That being said, some cities in the US are well above the national average for homicides, but we don't really know why. It's not drugs though. It looks like the leading cause right now are arguments, believe it or not: FBI — Expanded Homicide Data Table 12
I think alot of drug homicides may have went into the "unknown" category because many of them go unsolved. Also, from what I see, many of these arguments are from rival gangs or groups. They usually go hand and hand.

Arguments between people. People getting angry at one another. Someone getting murdered during an argument tells me this. It says alot about the mentality of the persons arguing. It says there is a mentality of "you are going to listen to me or I'm going to make you, and it might involve deadly force". There is a mentality of "live by the sword die by the sword". Quite sad that a person would feel like committing murder to get ones point across.
Yeah its great. Back in the day the Bronx would finish with 600+ homicides and a murder rate of over 50 per 100 k.
I see Bronx is at 30 through 5/24/15, that's very low! I'm impressed it's lower than Brooklyn as well as Queens given the streotype. Of course I know Brooklyn and Queens have more people...
Houston is going crazy, almost like back in 2006-2010. I mean what happened to our all time low this decade of 198 in 2013. Even the burbs are getting murders. At coveringkaty.com, Katy has reported 4 murders, a woman was killed on Thursday just up the 99 parkway at the local CVS pharmacy. 2 in the month of May alone. Also if you count bad driving, drunk driving and car accidents as murder than that number is 9 or 10. A couple years back Katy area was only receiving 0,1 2 or 3 murders a year now half way to the year an area of 300,000 people already have 4. But also 7 years ago Katy only had 150,000-200,000 people. Houston itself seems like 1 everyday. (There has only been one year since 2000, where we averaged 1 murder a day just in city limits and that was 2006).

A lot of cities are seeing big increases this year. Houston is up 59%. New Orleans is up 20%. Birmingham is up 63%. Atlanta is up 32%. NYC is up 10%. Chicago is up 15%. Detroit is up 25%. DC and Philly are up a little, Baltimore is just exploding and Milwaukee is up 180%!

Wouldn't that mean previous years would have also had similar percentage increase in crime? There's no correlation.
