Thank you all for your replies...

A question... Many have mentioned montclair nj.... I'm curious what is it that makes people say that particular town over the other towns in that area of northern nj? What is it that makes montclair different? I'm going to head up and check it out later. Thank you!!!

Lots of ex-Manhattanites move there when they have kids and want to start a family.

How far East?

Louisville KY has some really nice bohemian areas with tons of shops and restaurants but very affordable housing.

Frankfort Ave area

Bardstown Rd area

St Matthews is a more suburban area with a bohemian feel to it

Well Montclair is probably the quintessential ex-Manhattanite "starter suburb." They move to plenty of others too. Towns that fit the OP's bill would include places like Maplewood, South Orange, Summit. Places like Westfield, Chatham, and Ridgewood have a lot of the elements, but they're a little bit more pretentious (IMO). Getting a little farther from NYC, places like Lambertville (already mentioned) and Red Bank would be good to look into.

Asheville, NC. Beautiful scenery plus a section of the city is like stepping back into the old Haight-Ashbury era.

That's what I would expect... that the towns nearby would be sort of the same... Which is why I was wondering why so many people specifically said Montclair. Is there something about Montclair which made all those people say it instead of Summit or the other towns the last poster mentioned?

montclair is ok. its hyped imo because its like a college town nestled in an urban sprawl outside nyc. its surrounded by newark, passaic, bloomfield, clifton, etc... which are all no-nonsense towns/ethnic enclaves.
