I have been spending a lot of time looking at the different state forums and still can't decide on where to move. I will be finished with graduate school in December and looking to relocate. I know there is no such place as the perfect place to live, but I don't know where to start looking for a job. I am trying to narrow it down to about 5 or 6 places.

I grew up in the South with a population of about 25,000. I am looking for a bigger city but nothing too big. I don't want to spend a lot of time in traffic. It needs to have affordable housing with larger lots. A 30-45 minute commute would be ok from a near by smaller town that would give me the type of housing I need.

I am not use to snow, but some snow would be ok, but hard winters don't appeal to me, but neither do really hot summers.

A dog friendly city would be great. I like to do activities with my dogs and would like to get into agility.

Any help for someone who doesn't know where to start?
Amanda

I really like St. Louis, but it's probably too big for you, and it probably gets too cold. There are a lot of parks, though, and it's pretty affordable.

How about the southwest? It shouldn't be too cold for you.

Where do your family/friends live, and is it important that you be within a certain proximity to them?

I live in the 'burbs of Kansas City, MO, and I love it here.

Some family lives in South Mississippi, VT, Texas, and Chicago.

I think Texas and east would be better for me right now. Not ready to move across the country.

I will check out Kansas City; I don't really know much about it. I think St. Louis is too big for me, but I think the winters would be ok.

Thanks.

desert sun gave me an idea.. how about Albuquerque or Las Cruses, NM? I know they are West but it would be a new and different experience for you.

I was gonna mention that too, but the OP said they didnt want hot summers, which the SW is king of.

What about a place like Salt Lake City?

Albuquerque sounds good - unlike most of the southwest, it has mild temperatures year round, and has a small city feel. NM is also right next door to Texas, so you'd be close to family.

You may also like eastern mountain cities, such as Asheville, NC.

Kansas City and St. Louis are both great cities. Either one should be good for you.

St. Louis in about 2.8 mil and KC is about 1.9 mil.

Try Austin. You mentioned that you like Texas and that it is not too far from home. Austin is a great place to start and the local culture caters to the college-aged person. You might have some fun there!

Charlotte, NC

Big city, but not too big. Great weather, mild winters, hot summers. Plenty of parks. Very affordable housing. Only downside is that the job market is pretty weak.
