I wouldn't include Richmond in such a list. Maybe in the mid-90's (when it had successful second-tier baseball, third-tier hockey, and, briefly, pro women's basketball), but not now. They can't figure out a way forward for a new/improved baseball venue, which cost them the AAA Braves eight years ago, and could cost them the Flying Squirrels in the near future. Minor league hockey failed three times in the '00s and hasn't been back since. The indoor football team (through no fault of their own, it must be noted) is out of commission this year because their league collapsed around them, and there are no suitable replacements that make sense geographically.
There just isn't a whole lot of minor league stuff going on in RVA at this point. This is somewhat obscured by the media coverage of (in no particular order): 1) college programs, especially the recently successful VCU basketball, UVA baseball and basketball, and Tech football; 2) the Redskins (regardless of whether training camp is in town); 3) NASCAR and its two racing weekends at RIR.
