Hello, I am disabled due to chronic physical illness (not in a wheelchair), and am on SSI only (far below poverty level) as income. I would like to know where the best place in the nation would be for me to live. It would have to have extremely inexpensive housing (and Section 8), good doctors who take whatever insurance you get in that state if you are on SSI only as income, and local people who would not be discriminatory & snobby towards those on disability.
how much better is las cruces, nm to live than riverside, ca. were both on ssi and small ssa retirement check which the subtract from the ssi. can we find alittle house or cottage in the area cheap
I don't know a lot related to most of your questions (such as where most doctors would accept your insurance), but one question I have about this is whether your SSI benefit is adjusted to fit the cost of living in the area where you live. If it stays the same no matter where you live, then you need to do some research on the least expensive places to live. To start with, though, you would most likely want to avoid the Northeast corridor and the West Coast states. There might be some exceptions, which is part of the reason for researching cost of living, but generally within a region large metro areas will be more expensive than smaller metros and non-suburban small towns.
I dont think there is Any 1 place. All cities have Section 8 & HUD now a days. Most have clinics based on income. Most Drs take medicare &/or Medicaid. Most cities have Handicap sidewalks & stores.

Did you get a good answer, because I am also trying to find an affordable place to live that is safe and clean. I live in Illinois now but am open to moving wherever. I feel awful imposing on my family and am falling deep into despair! Blind Nan
It would seem that you would want to do some research on lower cost of living towns and states. Unfortunately, most of those places usually provide less social services. It would seem to me that areas of the southeast, midwest and southwest would probably generally be the cheapest.
Yuba City, Northern California. Or Palmdale/Lancaster, CA. Las Vegas, too.
Actually, the way to find a place is to go to craigslist.org, pick the city you want to look into, click on apartments for rent, input 1 BDRM, MAX $500, and type in the search box, "Section 8."
That will show you how much that city has for Section 8 people! As far as finding hospitals and medical in that area, you can contact the Chamber of Commerce.
P.S. You will have to apply for an apartment and then move your voucher after you have gotten an apartment in the new city.
