I live in LA and I am exhausted by extreme politics. I'm looking for somewhere to live where people will be your friend and talk to you whether you are a Republican, Democrat, or other, and it won't influence whether your girlfriend's family hates you or whether you can get a job.
From this map it looks like NC is good for this, can anyone recommend your city?
That map looks suspicious to me. Some states seem to jump out from surrounding ones, down to their state borders, with no clear explanation - Florida, South Carolina, and South Dakota being unusually prejudiced, New York state being unusually unprejudiced.
I would think this would be because of the survey methodology aggregating a few different questions, some of which relied on state-level policies or election results (e.g. "what do you think about your state's most recently elected Congressperson?" generating different results in states that had Congressional elections more recently). But it seems that the questions are only general ones about people's attitudes toward Republicans and Democrats. Strange.
My intuition would be that political prejudice is less strong in areas where Republicans and Democrats are talking to each other more frequently, and the article does mention that that's at least theoretically true. The North Carolina cities would probably fit that, as would other large, suburban metros with a lot of ethnic integration (Houston, Phoenix, Seattle's north and south suburbs).
I agree with North Carolina Cities. St. Louis is a fairly liberal city but no one cares about your politics. The suburbs lean libertarian. They say rural areas are a bit more conservative 50 miles out from the 270 255 loop.
Their motto is "Live Free or Die." They are conservative and a lot of them are rednecks the further north you go. Southern NH is getting the overflow from MA and the MA people don't get along too well with the NH people due to political views. Lots of guns too. It's a pretty state though.
If you don't want to be bothered by politics, try neighboring Vermont. They are live and let live, opposite of NH.

NH is not exactly a red state and I question how much of a "Live Free or Die" state it actually is.
