the caribbean, southeast asia, the middle east, the continent of africa, etc. would have a ton of overweight ppl if that were true. add large portions of south america to that mix.

i still think it has to do with diet and lack of public transportation.
I can't speak for all of those places, but I've been to the Philippines and there are tons of fat people. Maybe it's because of all the unhealthy food they eat. Also, the heat tends to make people want to lounge around all day.

Probably because Southern food is so incredibly dynamite.

When people think of Colorado, they usually don't associate it with fantastic food.

I don't know that the diet of people in the south is all that different from other parts of the country. Afterall, we have fast food restaurants from coast to coast. One thought I have is that maybe a hot humid climate might tend to make people live a more sedentary lifestyle. When I go out and mow the lawn I'm soaking wet by the time I'm done and can't wait to get back into the house. Can anyone else explain why people in the south are so overweight?
1. It's only consistently hot and humid there from May to September (maybe mid-April to mid-October in the hottest places). Before or after that you have some of the best outdoor weather in the country.

2. Southern cuisine is notoriously fattening.

3. The South has a large black population, which is far more obese than any other ethnic group. (However, they seem to carry it well - a black person with a BMI of 30 will probably look better than a white person with the same BMI, who will probably look better than an Asian with the same BMI)

That may be true, but you will see fantastically fit beautiful people there
compared to most of the country. The fattest people in Boulder are better looking than any New Jersey population.

If you look at the percentages, there really isn't that much differences between the states. The south is the fattest part of the country, but it's not like 40-50% or anything like that. Most states fall in the 24-26% range. So the South isn't MUCH fatter, it's just fatter.

It takes less energy to stay warm here and we have better food than the rest of the country. I just love those why questions. LOL

Now go look and see which part of the country lives the longest.
