I thought Chicago's "Second City" nickname was because so much of Chicago had to be re-built after the fire in the 1870s, so the city as it is now is the "second city" on that spot. I think someone once posted that here on city-data. Is that false?
Second city is a pretty generic term that is used globally to describe a country's second most populous city, though it is possible that Chicago is the only one to embrace it like they do.
LA is the second largest city in the U.S. in terms of population. In terms of popularity, LA is 2nd after NYC.
Chicago is the 2nd most powerful city in the U.S. after NYC. It's also the 2nd most important financial & business center in the US, and the only US city besides New York ranked in the top ten centers of commerce that drive the global economy.
Lots of visitors might not consider LA the 2nd biggest US city because they can't figure out if LA is a giant surburb, or a big city. They don't have that kind of impression once they arrive in Chicago.
