Tampa (Bay Area) can be very cosy. Beautiful beaches in Pinellas County. Some cool area treats like the Gaspirilla, Ybor City and such.
OTOH, the Houston Area, although lacking the asthetic splendor WRT its beaches, has a very diverse social landscape, top notch cultural institutions, including musuems and performance groups, similar flora and landscape, and generally similar weather, although Tampa doesn't have the cold snaps Houston does. Houston will have a two or three dozen days where the lows drop into the 30s/40s each winter. Tampa probably has only a third as many days like that.
Oh, and Houston has an NBA team while Tampa doesn't and Tampa has an NHL team while Houston doesn't.
Do plenty of research and just ask yourself what's more important to you.
I really don't care much about what professional sports teams a city has. My aunt who lives in Sarasota told me that Tampa is dark, referring to the atmosphere of the place. I guess I am just looking for a place withnice trees, nice fauna, attractive landscapes. On the other hand, I likea good industrial setting, too. (sections of town, that is). Factories,or refineries are beautiful sights to behold. If Tampa is dark, andpresumbably doesn't have much in terms of heavy industry, I am thinkingthat perhaps Houston is a better fit over Tampa. Hell I don't know. It'sso hard to make a decision without actually being there and seeing for one's self. I am just afraid that Houston is an armpit full of impoverishment. This hasalways been my impression of what Houston looks like. I am also open to otherwarm weather climates in the South if you have any suggestions? I wonder whatMobile is like, for example.

Interesting. Not quite sure what to make of that, but I can assure you that the atmosphere of Houston is not dark, not at all. It's a very friendly city. The people are one of its greatest (some would say only ) assets. I've never heard of someone choosing a place to live because it has refineries, but whatever floats your boat. We've got them, but you will never have to see them if you don't live or work on the east side of town, unless you want to...? I only see them when heading out of town via I-10 east, or in the distance on the way to Galveston.

Tampa is a great place for vacation, but the city itself leaves something to be desired. Houston is more of a city, more cosmopolitan, and better job market. I would say I would prefer Houston for living and Tampa for vacationing.

So in other words, you know NOTHING about Houston.
I've visited both for a few days, but never lived in either.
Houston has no zoning, so commercial districts in Houston are very dense. Tampa appears to have been designed with a more thoughtful approach to urban planning.
If I didn't have to work, I'd probably choose Tampa because it has a more laid-back lifestyle, while Houston has more jobs. Houston has more of both urban amenities and urban disadvantages.

My post referred to Tampa as dark, not Houston. Funny that you missed that. How could you not think refineries are a beautiful sight to behold,the stacks bellowing, the orange lights twinkling in the dusk, the smell ofindustry in the air. It has a beauty all its own, perhaps you are unableto appreciate it, or maybe you have greenie issues.
