With so many cities along the southern border poverty and drugs stricken I was just wondering if there are any resonable places to be found. San Diego would be about the only one that would spring to mind, at least that I have visited. Going east from there though...well, it's not pretty. El Centro, Yuma, Nogales, El Paso and Laredo are all very dangerous and have high unemployment. Are there any, even smaller cities, other places that are liveable for a middle class family?

I think Las Cruces, New Mexico fits what your looking for IMO. Last year it was #2 on Forbes list for ''Best Small Towns for Business'' and this year it just made #8 on the list. Its population is about 90,000 and a metro of about 160,000 so not too large and yet large enough for all the amenities that one is looking for. Its nestled next to the beautiful Organ mountains and the Rio Grande flows thru the city.
It has a nice university NMSU at around 16,000 students again not to large or small and it has White Sands missle range and americas newest Spaceport was just created there so Virgin Galactic will start launching rockest in 2009 with paying customers who want to space travel. Also made Money magazines 2005 list of ''Best College Towns to Retire'' and AARP 2006 ''Dream Towns'' to retire list.
Anyway i could keep adding to the post but you asked the question so i thought i'd give my thought on this city by the New Mexican/Mexican border.
El Paso is actually one of the nation's safest large cities, is routinely ranked amongst the nation's most livable cities, has a very low cost of living, and in my own personal opinion, outside of Southern California, has the best weather in the U.S.
