I heard you can see Mt. Rainier as far away as Victoria BC. I have seen it all the way in Othello/Moses Lake area which is at least 120 miles as the crow flies.

It'd have to be really clear, and you'd have to be at the top of a mountain or something to see it from Victoria.

I've never been able to see it around Othello or Moses Lake.

The furthest away I've seen Rainier is Everett, in fact, on a clear day there's a great view of it on US 2 between Snohomish and Monroe.

On clear days, San Gorgonio (11,503 feet) is visible from Huntington Beach... About 100 miles.

The formula is SquareRoot(feet/ 0.5736) = miles.

Say the mountain is 14,000 feet in Colorado and you are at 4000 feet in eastern Colorado. The mountain is then 10,000 feet above you, so you would divide 10,000 by 0.5736, and calculate the square root of that, which is 132 miles.

For approximation, to do in your head, it is simpler to use height times 7/4 (17,500), then do the square root. Can you do square roots in your head? The square root of 17,500 is ten times the square root of 175. The square of 13 is 169, and 13 times 10 is 130. Close enough.

On a clear day, I can see Rainier from Camano Island, and as far as Othello/Moses Lake, I have seen it from there(it would have to be a really clear day, but I have seen it). When you are driving highway 26 or 24, there is a good view of it.

You can see it from the top of Mt. Tolmie in Victoria. I've also seen it from Anacortes (top of Mt. Erie) and Aberdeen.

From the top of Tumwater Hill about a mile from the State Capitol in Olympia, you can see Mt. Baker (130 miles), Mt. St. Helens, and of course Mt. Rainier. Mt. Adams is visible from the Nisqually Ridge just south of I-5.

I've seen it from a boat in Bellingham Bay, which is about 130 miles or so. I wouldn't be surprised if you could see it from Victoria.

Entering the bonneville salt flats going west, I could see mountains in Nevada from about 50 miles away, but it may have been farther.

You can see Rainier from the top of some hills in Portland--that's over 100 miles away. There's a couple famous spots up in the West Hills you can spot it it just as you can usually spot the much closer Mount Hood and St. Helens--and sometimes Mt. Adams.

I've been able to see as far as Mt. Adams (including also seeing the Three Sisters, Mt. Washington, Mt. Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens) in Washington from the top of Mary's Peak in the Oregon Coast range, 154 miles away, on a very clear day. From the Willamette Valley floor, I've seen Mt. Hood on a clear day from near Tangent, OR, about 101 miles away.
