Mt Diablo to Piute Peak: The line-of-sight formula is based on the earth being spherical. Based on these heights, it predicts 153 miles. But if there are deep enough valleys inbetween the peaks, combined with some bending of light, that would explain the much longer distance.

You can see the Cumberland Plateau from Manchester, TN, which is about 20 miles away.

This question has several variables.
1. Is there haze involved?
2. How high is the mountain?
3. How good are the persons eyes?
4 etc.

No absolute answer that I could give. I was privileged to be on top of Pike's Peak in '03 and I could see a long ways. How far in miles I have no clue.

When we went up there, we were told we could see into Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. How true that is, I don't know.

If we go by the definition here: Mountain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm guessing around 20-30 miles away.....

I rode the cog rail up as the planned hike was a no go on fathers day that year. Fresh snow and ice. We were probably told by the guide on the train but I just don't honestly remember. When I go back I'll make sure I have a post it note or two with me. Now I am curious.

I found this thread after googling it because of my curiosity after seeing mauna kea and mauna loa (each about 14,000 ft.) from the east side of oahu, 175, and 185 miles away.

They are lucky to have such clear air over the open ocean. I remember flying home from Key west and the haze over the mainland was very visible.
