To the OP: Portland has a little bit of sprawl and being in the US it is of course capitalist. Houston also has a somewhat bohemian (but bourgois) neighborhood called Montrose. But for the most part I would say my characterizations are true as I have spent time in both cities. Houston is also more car dependent and Portlanders use their bikes and public transportation. Portland is more liberal. The weather is different as Houston is humid/subtropical and Portland is much cooler but also slightly humid with the rainy mist. Portland is more walkable and Houston is mostly accessible by car. Portland is a small/midsize city and Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S. Portland has more trees and nice views and I think it's easier on the eyes.

I concur. For some reason, I don't think the OP feels s/he will have the option to visit before making the move. I can't imagine moving someplace sight unseen, no matter how much information I'd gathered about it.

I could care less. I'm letting you know that you should chill out. What you said earlier wasn't even necessary.

Oh, God, I'm all off topic.

The two are apples and oranges, EXCEPT for humidity. Portland has cold humidity, and Houston has hot as hell humidity, even in October! Ugh...
As much as I hate constant rain, I would choose Portland over Houston any day. Is very pretty area, lots to see and do, still fairly safe, friendly, etc. Houston is the armpit of Texas, dirty, crime ridden, noisy, congested, crazy people, crazy traffic (need I go on?), etc.

So then, considering all this, is it fair to say that New York and Los Angeles are the left and right armpits of America?

I think most overcrowded states have their "armpits" to bear.

Only the humidity of Houston can make the most wonderful armpits though.

And to the OP, I have lived in both, but you already knew that.

I've been to both many times. Love them both.

Well, God put the humidity there, so take it up with Him. Not the city.
