Hello There! Well, after much research, this retired couple has finally decided on either Cherokee County or Forsyth County in Georgia to enjoy our retirement years to the fullest. We will be moving from beautiful N. California, where shall we say the cost of living has become increasingly too high & the state has become way too liberal Enough said about that! So, our question today is about which are the best independent living places for active older adults, that are located in a nice area that is safe/secure/quiet/beautiful/has pleasing amenities and reasonably priced? We would love a place with a beautiful view, has nice lap swimming available nearby, and we could buy or rent. We also seek no yard maintenance (or very little) and easy living, with easy (not crazy congested) drives within the community and nearby areas for enjoyment and shopping. Golf Course view would be nice, but we see so many very large homes on the golf course. We prefer 1800 to 3500 SF, so we can easily manage it. Any advice you have or suggested housing/apartments/condos etc we really should take a look at? If there are particular estimated monthly fees and costs you are aware of and we can expect to pay, do share. Thank you, and we look forward to hearing back from you!

I highly recommend that you look into The South's Premier Mountain Community | Big Canoe. Beautiful mountain community - golf, lakes, paved trails, club house w/ tennis and swim. It is, however, located in Pickens County (close to Forsyth and Cherokee Counties), but I believe it would have just what you are looking for.

Thank you for your advice! We had gone on to see both Big Canoe and Laurel Canyon communities last year. Yes, very very beautiful but a little too remote & wooded for us. And much of what we saw in Big Canoe had medium to large yards to take care of. We found that we preferred the proximity to hospitals, restaurants and shopping etc that we seemed to find in Forsyth and Cherokee Counties. I wonder if anyone might know of Senior living type of complexes (apts, condos, townhouses) where yards and maintenance are mostly taken care of, in the areas that we prefer? We have assessed that Active Senior Complexes here in CA are just way too pricey (cheapest is $5500/mth all the way up to about $10K/mth - for a couple. Yikes!). We are active and love to swim and enjoy couples dancing, so we aren't to the point of needing assisted living, but would like easy care living. Thanks again!

You probably should check out Cadence at Woodmont if Big Canoe and Laurel Canyon are a bit too remote and wooded for you. We are retired at don't live there but have several friends who do and they really seem to like it. It is a gated 55+ community for active seniors. Lots are small, houses are in the 3k-4k sf range, in the $400k-500k range, and home owners fee was around $300/mo range last I heard. That covers all yard work, pool maintenance, security, etc. Amenities are not overwhelming but the quality of the neighborhood seems to be their primary focus. Building is still very active in the community, and will not be filled out for a few years. Cherokee County offers a very nice property tax break for seniors. It's quite an advantage when compared to nearby counties. Anyway, you probably should at least take a look at Cadence.

Thank you. We just looked at Cadence on line, but prefer nicer views and more cathedral ceilings for the prices. Prices look to be in the price range of nicer view homes in Woodmont. Very nice otherwise. If there is any more advice on what other places we should definitely check out when we visit, please let us know. Now, in planning ahead for the future, I wonder what the assisted care possibilities are in the Canton and Woodmont areas. N. CA. Senior apartments that provide meals, weekly cleaning, activities and such can be from $5500-10K/month for a couple - and this is just for a small apartment type housing in N. CA. For these prices, might as well live on cruise ships. Seems the retirement dollar can go a lot further in GA (and much lower taxes too!). It would be nice to find a condo or townhouse type there, newer with a beautiful golf course view, but all we seem to see is beautiful larger homes with a beautiful golf course view. Again, we seem to prefer Cherokee and Forsyth Counties, in Georgia, for the senior benefits etc. Thanks again for your suggestions!
