I disagree, I think more people are brutally honest in an anonymous forum than in real life.

I've found the web content to be just about what I expected, what should we expect from those who hate openly on the web because they are restrained somehow at work, or in their neighborhood, or family. Same with those who openly show disdain for anybody not living up to their "standards"of financial success, or the raging maniacs who get all fired up over things of a racial, religious, and political nature.

The real beauty of it all is that no one really cares much what others say on most MB's, the only people who get into a semi violent stage are the same ones we read about in the papers, shooting, stabbing, and just creating mayhem wherever and whenever they can't get agreement. We say we cherish a certain level of civility, but, most people when driving their car, or blasting on the web can be anonymous, and that's the way of anonymity, it's cowardice at best, and pure evil when dirty deeds come calling.

I try to not talk about finances, retirement, credit, etc on the message boards. As to a few of the OP's examples:

-Have been pretty lucky with my driving (knock on wood) although my car did break down right in front of my son's schools while in the pick up line to his embarrassment. My car is 9 years old, low mileage and not going anywhere but it now has a new alternator and battery!!

-I do occasionally eat at McDonald's, especially when stressed. Brought home McD's for dinner last night although try to avoid it. I'm high risk for heart disease so really need to avoid it if at all possible.

-Love WalMart, especially their food mart. Target is my store of choice for many things!

-I do like crafted beers but that is more about living in Germany for 6 years and drinking some of the yummiest beers in existence.

-Hubby and I are average looking, both of us a bit overweight but working on it.

As to bragging though, I've had most of my problems on the parenting forums where I spend most of my time. Seems like if you do bring up a problem, you are a bad parent or not doing it right. Some posters on CD are perfect parents and have perfect kids that have always made the right choices. It reminds me of those People Magazine spreads where everyone is smiling, cooking up gourmet meals in their state of the art, spotless kitchen. Or lounging in their impeccably decorated house with million dollar views out to the ocean. Kudos to you if you have that sort of life filled with sunshine and rainbows. Many of us do not and come here to CD to unwind, get advice or seek a bit of support.

Of course some of it gets repressed by the moderators as they enforce the rules, but I think my meaning is clear.

Deep-seated hostility is an interesting thing in relation to the anonymity of screen names, as some people will even try to hide their screen names by posting rude and nasty but unsigned rep comments. So they are admitting to cowardice as well as aggression.
It really does depend on which forums you're looking at.
Seems like everyone in the fashion & beauty & the fitness forums have
delusions of grandeur when it comes to their looks, lol
And quite a few in the relationships forum like to pretend they're all that & more-
flawless basically- yet still wonder why they're single.
Seems like some of the married ones like to pop in to flirt
& live vicariously through the single ones...the nonsense continues, lol

Basically you gotta take it with a grain of salt
I have my personal select few posters who I think are always consistent with their posts.
They keep it light, simple & don't come across as desperate, sleazy, fake or deceptive.
On top of that, they're just fun to read

You forgot to mention that the women all make their own sauce--always.. I learned that years ago, when I was foolish enough to ask their favorite brand.

Gimmeabreak.

Liar/denier?

On the interwebs?

Say it isn't so.

I have never had any interest in Facebook, but one day .........................

I made up a total fantasy account just for giggles, which I eventually closed down.

There were actually dozens of people that "knew me".

We had great conversations going for many months about our past, present and future lives.

Now is this story of mine fact or fiction?

Or do you even care.

Unfortunately there are many people that become so personally involved in forum discussions that it tends to cloud their common sense and leads them into irrational thinking and behavior.

I have posted my views on the forums of this site and had people become enraged.

Smile have fun and take it all with a grain of salt people.
