I was listening to a story yesterday about the Zodiac killer who struck fear into Northern California in the 1960's and early 70's. He was never caught.

Do we even have serial killers today or much like the general population have they developed a need for a quick fix and now choose to walk into a school and start shooting?

Have serial killers grown Lazy?

The profile of a serial killer is Male, Intelligent, Methodical and Mentally Disturbed.

The profile of a mass shooter is Male and Mentally Disturbed.

Is the reason we have more mass shooters today than serial killers due to the dumbing down of America?

Back in the 60's 70's it was just as easy to get a gun or easier than it is today yet mass shootings were usually carried out by gangsters and mob people. Mass shootings of innocent people was unheard of in America until guys started "going postal" in the 80's. Going Postal was a term given to the rash of shootings were a Postal employee would bring a gun to work and shoot his supervisor. How did the post office solve this problem?

Has the need for instant gratification in our society spawned the mass shooter?

Is a mass shooter a modern day serial killer?

Serial killers are difficult to detect unless they are making their presence known, e.g. leaving their calling card or killing a lot of people using same method in same area. Many or most of them have been caught only because of dumb luck. They haven't gone away, they just haven't been caught.

I follow serial killers and have an interest in the subject. By definition, they do still exist, are still active, and are still being caught every year. However, as forensic pathology continues to improve, the opportunities to catch these killers multiplies. I'm sure that technology has prevented many serial killer from becoming one because they were caught in time. As our science continues to improve, I imaging that we will keep improving on identifying, helping, catching these killers before they can really get going.

Side note, there seems to be a rise of serial murders south of the border in Mexico, Guatamala, and Brasil. I'm wondering if this is a cultural shift or crimes of opportunity?

Yeah, it is commonly a white man.

Columbine, UCC, Charleston, Aurora, Sandy Hook

It also commonly is not

Washington Navy Yard, Virginia Tech, Ft Hood, Binghamton, Red Lake

Conclusion:

Far too common for humans

I don't know, but apparently there are more public mass shootings in the United States than in any other country in the world.

Ted Bundy fascinates me. His life is like a Hollywood horror movie. He was an attractive psychopath who targeted young, usually attractive college girls. What a freak that man was. Have you seen this last interview of him. The guy was so full of himself.

You cannot look at totals alone, you need to use rates or ratios. For example there is 6:1 ratio in the populations. If there was parity there should be six occurrences in the white population for every one occurrence on the black population.

As far as the mass murders go it depends on your definition of mass shooting but if 4 or more is the threshold commonly used by the FBI blacks are actually over represented in this category if you are considering population. I believe they are also slightly over represented in the serial killer category.

Mass shooters are not replacing serial killers, there are many unsolved cases still today...they are very hard to catch because there is normally no connection to victims and they tend to travel. Serial killers suffer from a compulsion, a deep need to kill in a ritualistic fashion. It's almost a sexual fetish. Mass shooters are usually anger -driven and have "targets' in mind who they feel wronged them.
