Wonder why some family relatives are referred too as "half sister or half brother"

Then again some are referred too as "step sister or step brother"

What would the difference be?

If you have the same mother then I think it would be "step sister or step brother"

If you have the same father then I think it would be "step sister or step brother"

Am I making any sense here?

Wonder where the term "half" comes into being?

There are only three parents involved here and it should be a no brainer.

Can someone enlighten me?

I am a parent and a Great Grandparent in the above situations mentioned here.

Steve

Step, no parent in common. Half, a parent in common.

I think your pereception is incorrect...

A step brother or sister is when you are not related at all, but your parents are now married, making you step siblings.

Half brother or sister - is when you have one parent in common that actually is a blood relation.

I have 2 siblings both are by different mothers, but our father is the same man. People would consider us half siblings, I just call them my siblings, but I was not raised with either of them.

Think I may have an answer to my "OP" questions.

Sister and Brother living under the same roof and household would be "step sister or step brother"

Those living being split in separate households (separated) would be called "half sister or half brother"

My granddaughter refers her son (my great grandson) as having a half sister since they live apart.

Oh well...guess I'll have a soda. Steve

Uh NO. Not even close.

A step sister or brother would be when two people get married who already have children by another person. Those kids would be step siblings. Remember the Brady Bunch on television? Those kids were all step brothers and sisters.

A half brother or half sister would be when siblings have one blood parent in common, but not both.
