France has had a right wing government for over 14 years now. And Sarkozy is even more right wing than Chirac was.

The real question before answering this thread is do women have a free choice in France on whether to wear a burqa.

I don't think Sarkozy is doing the right thing here. I don't like the Burqa nor what it appears to represent, but people have the right to wear it.

In reality, like others have said, this is about your average ethnic frenchman-on-the-rue is uncomfortable with his country becoming non-french, to which I can see both sides of the argument there (Multiculturalism vs Nativsm).
