I had a 88 Civic hatchback that would consistently deliver 42 mpg and I was young so I certainly wasn't driving it with fuel savings in mind.

I also read that the ridiculous amount of emission regulations they pose to the vehicles has resulted in a drastic loss of fuel efficiency. Thing is... if you are burning a lot more fuel, are you really being cleaner?
