The grease American's love to cook their french fries and chicken wings in, is now being used to power flights across the Atlantic.
The oil for the flight on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines comes from Louisiana and consists of waste oil left over from frying up spicey Cajun food.

I guess it's a step in the right direction but still just a drop in the bucket.
We still have a long way to go in the "Alternative Energy" department.
I think that a lot of folks are still in la la land in the way we waste way too much of just about everything.
"The pilots say the cooking oil works like regular jet fuel and does not require any special treatment by airline flight and maintenance crews"
Goes to show the pilots know nothing about cooking oil.
Cooking oil needs to be cleaned and the water needed to be removed, then a additive is needed to keep it from solidifying or coming out of solution at the low temps seen at altitude.
a1, aviation fuel is a thinner cousin to diesel fuel like #1 and is very dry.
Cooking oil has been used as a fuel for a long, long time in diesel engines.
I don't see it catching on and I'm surprised the FAA allows it for commercial flights? There sticklers about fuel.
In before a certain poster comments about how he's driven diesel VW Rabbit's on cooking oil since the 1970's, 50 MPG since 1973, no OPEC or Dino's required.

1976... first model yr of VW diesel in USA 40 mpg GAS (ick) Rabbits came to USA in 1975. 1973 we were still driving Air Cooled, and NO FUEL crisis (yet) started in Oct '73 (74 model yr)! Please do your homework!
Jets MUCH prefer algae fuel and Brasserie grain crops, lower temp crystalline transition. (but Europe buys all that good stuff!!, USA is stuck with SOY... terrible bio-diesel, but good for the National Soybean council.)
BTW: Used fry oil IS as expensive as Dino Diesel in recycle centric locations, BUT a national website will find you cheaper grease (Or it gets sent to China by Baker Commodities and returns to USA as LIPSTICK Enjoy that next KISS
You can still get PLENTY of grease for FREE in most of the USA (and many places you get PAID to take it away ) One of my friends uses it in his diesel genset. He heats the floors of his house with the engine coolant heat transfer, and sells power back to utility and gets $100/month CHECK instead of a bill from Electric Utility. On FREE grease of course... been doing this for nearly 20 yrs.
Possibilities endless for MANY. Naysayers can have all the GAS (ick) they want, we don't need it...
