Ironically, I had MORE lights on tonight at 8 pm than usual. I was working on a project that required substantial light to see the details. So the TV was on for background noise, too.
I decided to use my washer, dryer, and dishwasher during Earth Hour this year. I also turned on extra lights in my house AND drove my SUV to the grocery store even though it's within walking distance from my house. And yes, I'm totally serious. It was my form of protest against this ridiculous event.
In real life, sure, I turn off lights when rooms are not in use and I've been slowly replacing my incandescent light bulbs with LEDs (CFLs are banned from my house; I hate them). I also live in a relatively energy-efficeient home, I recycle, I ride transit to work during the week, etc., because I want to, not because I feel like I have to do so in order to save the world. Still though, I hate Earth Hour.
I actually wasn't aware that it was Earth Hour until a few hours beforehand; one of my friends mentioned it to me because he knows how I feel about it. I don't think my city participated this year (i.e. making the lights on City Hall go dark for an hour) though they have participated in past years.
They don't matter. Just "the" Earth Hour at 8 pm matters.
They way I look at it is I celebrated Earth Hour between 2 am and 3 am. All my lights were off. The TV was off. The computer was on sleep.
