I suppose I should just let it go sometimes, but it's hard for me to resist pointing out when someone is making a fool of themselves, especially when leading innocent posters astray. First of all, the OP didn't ask about NYC, LA, SF, etc. I think he's well aware that Winston-Salem is, in fact, not any of those places, as anyone can plainly see on a map. The OP asked about Winston-Salem, so let's help answer his question rather than acting like a pompous azz.
Second, Ziggy's has been closed for almost four years. Third, there is no such place as the West End Tap House. We do have the West End Opera House AND the West End Tap Room--you might want to update your list of recommendations.
Fourth, for the OP, there are plenty of decent bars in Winston-Salem, and no, the police aren't out to get you unless you are indeed breaking the law. I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Edit to add: Also for the OP, please ignore HC's quite ill-informed recommendations. The places he mentioned are okay, but there are some newer spots that might suit you better. Try NOMA, Recreation Billiards, Finnigan's Wake, Elliott's Revue, the Garage, and Tate's, among others. There's also usually a good crowd at Foothills Brewery.
Knoxville, TN for the time being. I got my feet wet in Tuscaloosa, AL for college though. were at Finnigans Wake right now and it is a good time. I'd recommend it myself
Sorry I didn't see your post until just now, and I assume it was directed to me. I'm an NC native, born in a small town in the southeastern part of the state. I've also lived in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Charlotte, and now Winston for the past 18 years.

Thanks! It seems like you know a lot about the area and always point people in the right direction for entertainment. I had a feeling you were a local.

Thanks for the kind words!
