I'm moving to the WS from South Florida =] excited about the change but have been a bit overwhelmed looking for an apartment or duplex online. I'm hoping someone can help me focus on the right area?
I know there have been plenty of "young professionals" postings, but I don't think I really fit into that category. Yes, I am a mid-20s professional, but i definitely don't define my life by such and tend to have a different set of priorities.
For (1) I cook everyday and being able to pick up fresh produce is much more important to me than nice restaurants that i'll rarely go to. Thus, a good grocery store nearby is huge!
2) I have been training in Muay Thai for the past 6 months and would love to maintain this. It doesn't have to be muay thai per se, but anything MMA related (brazilian jui jitsu!, Krav Maga!). I've found two good looking gyms in Kernersville, but it would be a mistake to base my apartment around a gym's website. Any pointers in good gyms in the area. Please no Crossfit, been there done that, leads to injuries.
3) would love to be near a park. I need trees in my life. concrete jungles are depressing - one reason why i don't think downtown would fit my lifestyle.
4) ideally i'd like some space to store my bike, kayak, paddle board, surf boards, etc... on the property. Even better, i'd like to start a garden and chicken coop. This may prove difficult, but just thought i'd put it there.
anyways, many thanks for reading this. Hoping for the best and super excited to be living in the Triad! wooot!
Hi Mit, welcome to WS! I can't help with the MMA, nor can I recommend a specific place for you to live, but I can tell you there are plenty of trees and parks here, even in the downtown area.
For shopping, we have the usual big supermarkets and Whole Foods/Fresh Market places. But for my money one of the best-kept secrets is Ronnie's Country Store on Cherry St. downtown. They have lots of fresh produce (local when possible), better-looking and much cheaper than the supermarkets, along with lots of old-time goodies like candy bins, a sorghum molasses barrel that you serve yourself, homemade jams, jellies, and pickles, a large selection of dried beans in barrels, and the entire back of the store is dedicated to curing country hams. They'll cut whatever portion sizes you want. I even found some creasy greens there a few weeks ago. I love this place!
Definitely will need long term storage for that surf board and paddle board in the Triad!
