Our house just sold, and we are moving that way in about six weeks. The plan is to rent something (in the 800 a mth range) until we can find a place to buy (in the 350,000-400,000 range, or less). I want to know where the good neighborhoods are...I've been doing a search online and there seem to be many possibilities as far as renting, but without hoofing it out there and looking at them all, it's hard to know where to look.

The only criteria we have is that we need to be convenient to the airport in Greensboro, no more than a 30 minute commute.

Hi Cryren, welcome to the Triad! A few comments that (I hope) may help:

First, Lewisville is about 35 minutes from the airport. It's an easy enough commute, but it is technically longer than 30 minutes. Lewisville is a great place to live, but if "less than 30 minutes" is that important you might consider Kernersville.

Second, in general the preferred neighborhoods in Winston-Salem are on the west to northwest side of town (opposite side from the airport), including the suburbs of Clemmons and Lewisville. Within the city limits the neighborhoods of Ardmore, West End, and Sherwood Forest are very popular, but there are lots of others. There are also pockets of great neighborhoods in outlying areas/suburbs like Pfafftown, King, and Rural Hall (to the north), and more rural areas south and southeast of the city. There are tons of great neighborhoods available, so I couldn't begin to list them all.

Since you're renting at first, you'll have the time to go out and search on your own for something more permanent. For your rental property, I'd suggest trying to narrow down what area you'd like to be in by asking yourself some basic questions--e.g., do you want to be close to downtown Winston-Salem, closer to the airport, urban vs. rural, in a certain school district, etc. Whatever the answers are, you should find plenty of options that would suit you until you decide to buy.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask more questions as you narrow down your choices.

I've been looking in the Ardmore area, and I LOVE the houses! I'm noticing there aren't a lot of rental options there, and to buy, we would want more land. I can't stop looking at that area though, I'm transfixed. =) Thank you for the other areas to check out...I'm going to do some research on those too. Lewisville is where his folks are, and an additional 5 minutes to be closer to them would be OK. Kernersville is also on the list, and so is Winston Salem. Thanks again! =)

If you're looking in the $350-$400k range, this gives me a chance to plug Meadowlands, where we moved last year.
Can't help for rentals, but we love living here.

Downside is that while it's 15-20 minutes from most areas of the Triad, it's also 15 minutes from ANY areas of the Triad (minimal shopping or services less than 15 minutes away). But it's convenient to WS, Gboro, and HP.

We found a place in Pfafftown! Keeping fingers crossed that all goes well, but the offer has been made and accepted, inspection went well, just waiting now on the appraisal. Beautiful house with acreage. =) I'm excited!
