“In the next month or so people are going to start seeing concrete lanes being poured … from the U.S. 29 side and moving east to west,” Moody said last week.

"That portion is expected to open to motorists in spring 2023."

It will be interesting to see if traffic drops on 29 after this opens. I would think the control cities at the interchange with 840 would be Winston-Salem and PTI. Likewise I wonder if Danville will be added as a control city at the 40/840 interchange

I would assume they would add Danville to the sign. They have Martinsville on the 40/73/840 sign on the west side of town.

There are plans to upgrade 29 to interstate standard from the 840/785 interchange all the way to Reidsville... if that is what you are were asking.

With regards to the future I-685 corridor, the Wilmington Urban Area MPO will vote during it's next meeting on June 29 on a resolution to ask NCDOT to extend I-685 east and south of Dunn along US-421 to Wilmington.

https://portcitydaily.com/local-news...to-wilmington/

I'm sorry, but that would be a complete waste of money, IMO, especially with I-40 right next door near Wilmington. It would be much cheaper and easier to extend I-685 east of Dunn along the general NC-55 corridor, and tie into I-40 near Newton Grove.

I would be shocked if NCDOT went along with this crap.

Absolutely ridiculous. But while we are putting in requests on our interstate wishlist, the Triad should petition NCDOT to transform US 421 west of Winston to the Tennessee line; US 29 from Greensboro to the VA line; and US 158 from Winston to Reidsville into interstates.

Someone on AARoads forum emailed AASHTO about their recent meeting results, which was posted. Looks like Future I-685 is a done deal. AASHTO approved NCDOT's request during it's spring meeting earlier this year.

Exciting! Now make US 421 an interstate to North Wilkesboro!

The final leg of the Greensboro urban loop will be complete this month perhaps in a few weeks. After decades of planning and construction, the entire loop will finally be completed. I suspect they'll finally put I-840 directional shields next to the I-785 shields along I-85/I-40 in eastern Greensboro. Just to show how long construction took, I was in my early 20s when construction first started and now I'm in my mid 40s.
