When I say best, I mean where is the nicest area in or around Greensboro to visit and live? I am starting a job at UNCG and would like to move to a nice part near some cultural happenings. What parts should we see if we are in town?

It all depends on how you define "best." Some people would say best means most expensive, which would take you to Irving Park, which is probably the most expensive established neighborhood in the city. Incidentally, it's also where you'd find the Chancellor's house.
Others would define best as urban or walkable, in which case you'd look to downtown or many of the areas surrounding UNCG, including Tate Street and the Whiskey District.
Since others mentioned the cultural ideas, I'll make suggests for the visiting part.
If you're looking for a really nice hotel, try the O.Henry Hotel, very elegant, traditional. Beautiful but not cheap (but a huge breakfast buffet is included). Their sister hotel, The Proximity, is right down the road. It's very modern, urban-looking and green!
The nicest shopping area is right across the street -- The Friendly Center and The Shoppes at Friendly. For serious shopping -- Brooks Brothers, JCrew, Talbots, Ann Taylor etc. -- they have everything!
If you're into golf, there is a really beautiful public course -- Bryan Park just a little north on Route 29.
So nice to hear of someone moving with a job already lined up! Best of luck.
To above poster..what do you think of the neighborhoods off of Lake Brandt Rd near the Day school?
