Don't rely on your real estate agent; call the cable company and give them the street address.
I had to have cable since I telecommute and Charter is not any worse than the cable I had at my past address.
Charter isn't as bad as some people say it is. In the past, I had a few minor issues with them - compounded by incompetent customer support - but I haven't had any trouble in a long time, and the Internet is very fast. I have Charter's bundled TV and Internet but use Ooma VOIP (which, by the way, I recommend).
Go online to the different company's and enter the address of the rental office of an apartment complex in the zip code you desire. I've done it several times.
I've had many issues with Charter in the past, not in the Upstate, but in other areas I've lived (Asheville, Wilmington), but their internet here in the Upstate has been good. Definitely would not recommend AT&T U-verse, had that for internet for a year or so and it was very disappointing. Switched to Charter a few months back and so far so good.
Cable internet services are really DSL ... which is delivered over phone lines by cable companies, rather than AT&T. Some areas also have Fiber Optic services available (FiOS) which are delivered over fiber optic cables, and there are also satellite internet services available (like Dish network). As roadpony says, a realtor can probably point you in the right direction; looking around, it appears a lot of area residents aren't too fond of Charter.
Actually they have changed from DSL to what they call U-verse at AT&T for high speed broadband which is really just VOIP voice over internet protocol. When it first came out you could get it for cheap. Now they rip you off. The broadband connections are iffy and the phone reception can be terrible making you sound like you are underwater when you are simply talking to someone close by. Also if the power goes out you have NO PHONE. That is why it is good to have a land line for your phone.
