Is there some survey or something that says Charleston is the best place to live in the country? I find that hard to believe.
What makes a city a great place to live varies a lot from person to person. I like the upstate SC area. It's convenient to the mountains, has a good variety of things to do, has a nice downtown, doesn't get too cold in the winter, and only has a brief period of summer where it gets intolerably hot.
I'd love to see the Swamp Rabbit trail extended into a Greenbelt network that connects the residential areas of Greenville County (spurs to Simpsonville, Mauldin, Taylors, Greer, and the Southwest part of the county). It would be great to see it extended further to connect to other neighboring towns like Easley as well.
I would love to see better planning for development to prevent additional Woodruff Road areas where the development exceeds the capacity of the infrastructure.
On a similar note, many of the roads in the area are in need of resurfacing (SC 153 between Easley and I-85, US 123 between Liberty and Easley, I-85 between Woodruff Road and Mauldin Road, and too many other roads to mention them all).
A road that would connect US-25 North or Travelers Rest back into I-85 without the 1,000,001 red lights on White Horse and/or Poinsett would be a big boost to development of the North side of Greenville. The Simpsonville are really boomed once I-385 was extended to tie into the access controlled US-276 South of Mauldin. I think we would see similar development North of Greenville if such a road was built.
I agree that Greenville has quickly become the best city in the nation, if not the world. I don't see any reason why it can't be.
I support burying power lines, if the people who want that done pay for it, and not people who don't care either way. I'd rather not pay more on my power bill for that kind of thing.
I live in Charleston. I LOVE my town but trust me, this is not the best place in America to be. Shopping sucks (malls), traffic is horrendous, tons of tourists when you want to enjoy the beauty of this town, and cost of living is so much higher than Greenville. I say all this because I used to live in Greenville.
Now, if I could live anywhere in the USA and had all the money in the world...Lahaina, Maui. Pretty sure their quality of life is amazing as I've been there and literally cried when I left.
I can almost guarantee you that 99% of people would choose another location in the world if they had all expenses paid vs living in Greenville. I personally would move to Australia if I didn't want to be in the USA.
Google search "charleston best city in the world" I'm not saying I agree just that some folks at least seem to think so.
Just so everyone knows I'm not trying to get an argument going. I wanna talk about Greenville's future and what everyone would like to see happen. Ya know what kind of stuff do you fantasize about happening here. Big pie in the sky stuff.
If not what do we need to get there? What are the things we need to improve quality of life to the point we can take the crown from Charleston?
Things I'd like to see:
Burial of all power lines
Better retail
Selective national retail downtown customized for an urban environment
High speed rail from Atlanta to DC
Entertainment and shopping complex DT ie, Movie theater with imax, bowling alley, upscale night clubs
water park and amusement park
DT convention center to attract major mid sized cenventions that rotate locations
Football team
Ikea
Magnolia HT
Casino
Redevelopment of the West side of town ie White Horse
National destination quality golf course
Urban multi floor Target with grocery DT
Redevelopment of Woodruff road to be walk-able
I agree with burial of power lines, more streetscaping stretching up Wade Hampton through Taylors to Greer, White Horse, etc, more sidewalks out of downtown, some type of rail/megabus to Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Atlanta, water park/amusement park, entertainment and shopping complex, convention center to attract more known bands, NFL/NHL teams but I think it maybe too small, widening of roads or parallel to Woodruff Rd, I'm fine with the retail, more multi-use developments (town centers), more restaurants in Greer/Taylors aside from fast food, cleaning up strip malls to look more attractive, outside restaurant/bar with a deck, swimming pool and live entertainment.
Greenville has come a long way and I think it will continue to grow. Downtown is beautiful, now I think it's time to work on surrounding towns.
