A friend's mother died Jan 4th. She was cremated but there will be a funeral on the 27th Jan. After the funeral there will be a reception for everyone. I will go to the funeral but can't go to the reception. I would hope going to the funeral is a show of support and acknowledgment of the family's loss.
It would be entirely proper to go to the funeral, and tell the family (or even just your friend) "I'm sorry, due to prior commitments, I can not go to the reception. Please express my condolences to everyone."
IMO, no further explanation is needed.

If you have relatively strong ties with the family, have known the deceased well go to both. If your out of
state we for example told everyone, we would not be coming to either ( a few rare exceptions if our schedule permits) My wife and I will be cremated and will reluctantly have a small service with a picture and a few testimonials and probably captions from Young Frankinstein and anything hilarious mixed with Christian and messanic music. We won't have a grave or a cemetery marker unless although perhaps a placque at a military cemetery that includes a spose site?
My understanding is that the refreshments are for the convenience of those who have had to travel to the funeral and might be hungry, not at all obligatory.
It's fine...you go to what you can...not for the deceased...but for the family.
