I don't know about other states, but I know when you get drawn for deer in Arizona, there is a minimum caliber you need to use, which is a .24/6mm caliber, and you can only have 5 rounds in the rifle (4 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber) while hunting. I love my Colt AR-15, and it's a very accurate rifle, but I wouldn't take it deer hunting, unless I anticipate running into Sasquatch/Big Foot.. For deer, I prefer either my Remington 700 in the 6mm Remington for distances up to 200 yards, or my Ruger M77 MKII in the .300 Winchester Magnum for those long range shots.

I think that I would want a round far more substantial than even a 300 win mag for my Sasquatch encounter, something in the order of .375 H&H or better... a lot better
LOL. What kinda bullet would one use for a Squatch? FMJ? SP? JHP?
All three! Since no one has ever killed one, I'm not leaving anything up to chance.
PS - if it goes down, I AM NOT GOING OVER TO THE BODY TO EXAMINE IT, like the idiots in every horror movie that I've ever seen. I'm getting the hell out of dodge and let other folks do the post-mortem.
pps - just for the record I would hate to be the first person to shoot or kill one... but dude if it comes my way in anything other than a conciliatory manner....

But ff you don't bring back a body, you'll forever be labled as a wacky hoaxer.
As far as AR's for hunting, I see no problem provided the caliber is appropriate for the target animal. You need to resist the urge to fire rapidly though as multiple shots does more damage to the meat or pelt.
In my state you'd need to use a 5 round mag to hunt with one (semi-auto is limited to 6 round mag capacity in Vermont while hunting).
Personally I prefer manual action guns (bolt or lever) for hunting as they're more reliable IMHO.
has anyone ever thought hunting with ARs to be un-ethical? I aint to animal rights left wing yuppie just gotta wonder why you need semi auto let alone 10+ round mags to hunt
sure some will say "in case you need a follow up shot"...I don't believe that. my grandpa used an old Kentucky blackpowder for all his hunting...ill tell ya...this taught him amazing marksmenship that he later taught to me..theres few things harder then thinking 3 seconds ahead of pulling the trigger. shooting blackpowder is a pain to master but just amazing every time you take down game...
I cant say the same for a AR style rifle set up for shooting with a 30round mag,30x scope, muzzle brake,16-20" barrel all wearing a Realtree camo coat just so the game cant see what kinda gun your shootin em with!!!
If you are hunting people or neighborhood pets then yes, I think it's unethical.
Me personally, I enjoy going by the local petting zoo after hours to do my hunting.
My AR is my primary varmint rifle. Nothing over yotes or mountain lion. But it drops the latter plumb dead out to 400+ with 62and gr Ballistic tips or VMax. It is to small for deer. Way. Cor that I have my 243(which is great on varmints as well)in and me good ol' 06. The AR is built to shoot accuaratly and does so in spades. Tends to favor 62 gr bullets but shoots well witb lighter ones to. Over 68 or with a boat tail bullet it tumbles past 300. But she'fs a shooter. Many a varmint has met its end with it.
