Get their license plate number and hand the evidence over to the police. Real crime hurts a lot of people.
The police love hard evidence of real crime. Film of the crime with license plate number is hard evidence.
Yeah - and they MIGHT get around to it in 3-10 years or so........
NOT a shot on cops - it's that their political masters already have them overloaded with other things they have to do. Minor property crimes don't generally qualify for anything more than taking the report.
There was a time when stealing my vehicle would have been ruinous to me - with 4 kids to feed, a $500 deductible was more than a months worth of groceries - but the junkers I drove then weren't worth insuring like that - so that meant I'd have to spend 2-3k for another vehicle. Yeah - back then, you try to steal my car, I *WILL* use deadly force.
Today - lots of variables......but I DO hate a thief, so yeah - they may meet the business end of a .45. And in Texas, that's the end of that. In THIS state, we believe you have a right to keep that which is yours.
Seriously DOUBT that any idiot who ransacks a car for loose change, cellphones or miscellaneous valuables, will be carrying a gun. If the car is in your yard, your driveway, your property,...just head out there with a Can of pepper spray and an ASP. Hose them down, empty the bottle on their face, and go to town with the ASP. When the cops come, tell them he was breaking into my car, and then got violent. Case closed. You don't need to shoot some jerk who's breaking into your car, unless he pulls a gun on you or a knife. I would be worried MORE if he's got a knife.
If you need to shoot him, then make sure he has a weapon in his hand before the police come. case closed---have a nice day.
Set up the cameras, etc, so you definitely get a picture of him/them and their car.
Lots of pictures.
The cops here have been able to nail people with these IDs. Several arrests have been made bc of people's home security videos.
That's what you want. Hard evidence and nailing the creepy ass lowlifes. In my opinion, it'd be a service to society to have these people dead, but you can't justify doing it.
We need less panty waste states and socialist politicians - and when scum steals your hard won property they die.
Don't wanna get shot? Don't rob, steal or run from cops. Pretty simple. Why don't the bleeding hearts figure it out?
My state of residence has nothing to do with it. I patrol some of the worst projects in the country daily, have been in more than one shooting and have seen dozens of people shot over the years, including during 4 tours overseas with the Army.
I'd drop a perp in a heartbeat if they are presenting physical injury or death upon myself or anyone else. But property crimes? No. That doesn't sit right with me. I can't justify that with my personal morals (and I'm an athiest...)
Having seen quite a few last breaths, I'm not willing to cause another over my iPod.
Outside the house if said perp is aggressive towards me or anyone else, then he's DRT. Inside the house, he's DRT ASAP, his demeanor being determined after he assumes room temperature.
What is DRT? Is that supposed to be short for 'dirt'?
^^^ And therein lies the problem.

So in your mind the punishment for simple theft is the death penalty? I hope you never surf the web or check personal messages on the clock...
The only way lethal force would be justified in a simple property theft type of situation is if you yell at the perp and he starts attacking you... and maybe not even then. This happened in New York at about the same time at the Zimmerman trial: Roderick Scott: The 'Black George Zimmerman' Acquitted of Murder in 2009
Just like the OP's scenario. Man confronts three teens outside his house breaking into his neighbor's car. According to him, one of the teens charged him so he shot in self defense. According to the dead teen's friends, they were all begging for mercy and he shot anyway. He was immediately charged with murder, the charge was reduced to manslaughter, and ultimately he was acquitted. But I'd bet he will be paying off his legal fees for the rest of his life.
As stated by my HCP instructor (paraphrase), "Whatever you are defending had better be worth everything you own, because that's what you will have to sell to pay to defend yourself in criminal or civil court: everything you own."
Remember, there are always two sides to a story, and the other side can lie.
